Research topics

The research topics we can ask about the amphitheatre fall into two main groups: those dealing specifically with the Roman monument, as used between the first and fourth centuries AD, when the Roman fortress and town of Deva were part of the Roman province of Britannia, and those dealing with the fifth to twentieth centuries, when Chester went from being a ruined Roman place to a thriving modern city.

Within these two broad groups of questions, there are a number of more specific questions we can also ask, about the layout of the site, the plans of individual buildings, how they were built, what they were used for and the dates at which various changes took place. The next few pages deal with these themes in some detail, and pose some very specific questions.
