Tables of archaeological survival

A breakdown of estimated archaeological survival by area

By using the areas defined on the previous page and shown in different colours on the map, we can assess the volumes of deposits of different date across the site. This uses information from a new plan of the amphitheatre as a whole and data from excavations from 1929 to 1994. The areas have been calculated using a Geographical Information System, to be as precise as possible.

Areas of different land use

An assessment of the quality of survival by area

The second table attempts to score the survival in different parts of the site, according to current land use. The overall score attempts to give a percentage survival rate, based on what we know or can surmise about the presence of archaeological deposits of different date. It does not assess the relative importance of the different types of archaeology!
